The Electronics and Communications Department commenced in the
year 1969 and now runs one undergraduate, two postgraduate programs (MTech in
VLSI & Embedded Systems and M Tech in Communication Systems) and PhD
programs under VTU. The programs offered by the department are the most sought
after branch by top CET (conducted by Karnataka examination authority) rank
holders and other aspirants from across the country. All the three programs are
accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), and are compulsorily
outcome based, structured to meet the needs of Industry and Research. The
program contents are upgraded on a biannual basis with involvement from
industry and reputed research institutions.
A total of 44 experienced faculty members all of whom are
postgraduates and ten of them with PhDs as well,support three core
specializations (VLSI, wireless & wireline Communications as well as Image
& multimedia processing) in the Department. Academics at UG and PG level is
sustained with a staff to student ratio of 1:13 and well supported by
licensed version of basic software tools in over 200 computers. The curriculum
includes a strong self-study component and mini projects at all levels so as to
develop the students’ independent analytical abilities. To support research
across the specializations, an excellent infrastructure comprising of Software
tools (Cadence etc.), Software Simulation environment (FEKO, HFSS EM flow
solvers, VxWorks with specific Board support packages etc.) and state of the
art equipment (Network Analysers, Channel simulators etc.) are available in the
department. Apart from PhD oriented academic research in the core areas, the
department has been involved in a wide range of application oriented research
supported by grants received from DRDO, ISRO and Industry for current topics in
underwater communication, Image processing and high performance Compact
antennas.
